Cast Breakdown:
Brindsley Miller:  male, 20s-30s:  A young sculptor, intelligent and attractive, but nervous and uncertain of himself.

Carol Melkett: female, 20s-30s:  His financee.  A young debutante, very pretty, very spoiled, very silly.  Her sound is that unmistakable, terrifying deb quack.

Miss Furnival:  female, 40s-?:  A middle-aged spinster.  Prissy; and refined.  Clad in the blouse and sack skirt of her gentility, her hair in a bun, her voice in a bun, she reveals only the repressed gestures of the middle-class spinster-until alcohol undoes her.

Colonel Melkett: male, 40s-60s:  Carol's commanding father.  Brisk, barky, yet given to sudden vocal calms which suggest a deep and alarming instability.  It is not only the constant darkness which gives him his look of wide-eyed suspicion.

Harold Gorringe:  male, 20s-40s:  The camp owner of an antique china shop, and Brindsley's neighbor.  Harold comes from the North of England.  His friendship is highly conditional and possessive:  sooner or later, payment for it will be asked.  A specialist in emotional blackmail, he can become hysterical when slighted, or (as inevitably happens) rejected.  He is older than Brindsley by several years.

Schuppanzigh:  male, 30s-?:  A middle-class German refugee, chubby, cultivated and effervescent.  He is an entirely happy man, delighted to be in England, even if this means being employed full time by the London Electricity Board.

Clea:  female, 20s-30s:  Brindsley's ex-mistress. Dazzling, emotional, bright and mischievous.  The challenge to her to create a dramatic situation out of the darkness is ultimately irresistible.

Georg Bamberger:  male, 40s-?:  An elderly millionaire art collector, easily identifiable as such.

Synopsis: Struggling artist Brindsley Miller and his fiancée Carol are having a party with the aim of impressing Carol’s bombastic father, Colonel Melkett, and millionaire Georg Bamberger, who may buy some of Brindsley’s sculptures. They have borrowed (without permission) the furniture and effects of their fussy neighbor, Harold, to make the flat more presentable. Before the guests arrive the main fuse blows, plunging the flat into darkness; only we, the audience, can see what is happening. What follows is a frantic romp with unexpected visitors, mistaken identities, and surprises lurking in every dark corner! The result, as you might expect, is chaotic, disastrous – and very funny!

"Bell, Book and Candle"
By John van Druten
Director: Linda Sopp

Auditions:        Sunday, March 2, 2008
                        Monday, March 3, 2008

The author assumes, according to the New York Times, "…that a few modern people can cast spells and perform feats of supernaturalism. Gillian Holroyd, of the Murray Hill district, cast a spell over an unattached publisher, partly to keep him away from a rival and partly because she is attracted to him. He falls head over heels in love with her at once, and wants to marry her. But witches, unfortunately, cannot fall in love, and this minute imperfection leads into a number of difficulties." Ultimately the lady breaks off with her companions in witchery, preferring the normal and human love offered her by the attractive publisher, Shepherd Henderson, but before the happy conclusion of the romance, Gillian comes very near losing him—but doesn't

Gillian Holroyd - 25-30 - Gillian Holroyd is a witch who goes about casting a spell on a tenant in her building, causing him to fall in love with her. The reason for the spell is revenge, but she never thought she would fall in love with him and caught in her own spell. Gillian’s attitude is self assured, but there her heart will eventually break her walls down.

Shep Henderson - 25 & up - Shep is a open and trusting person who concerned about doing the “right” thing. Shep is a publisher.  He falls in love hard and fast with Gillian, only slightly questioning how this has happened to him.

Aunt Queenie Holroyd - Ageless - Miss Queenie is the quintessential daffy but caring elder family member, confidante and a bumbler.  She enjoys life and wishes with all her heart that she had Gillian’s talents. She came into witchcraft later in life.

Nicky Holroyd - Younger brother of Gillian.  He is flamboyant and a warlock who enjoys his gifts and does not mind flaunting them or himself.  Although he initially appears a an easy going person, there is a darker side he reveals when he feels he has been betrayed.

Sidney Redlitch - 50’s – Sidney  is an author who may have gotten in over his head. He writes books detailing the lives of witches and warlocks and believes he can spot them easily. In fact, he is unable to recognize a room full of witches even when he is among them.

*** Please be sure to read the bold items under some of the characters.***

Dede Cooper- (age 40 to 60) Gutsy, honest and striking Texas original. A true one-of-a-kind individual who delights in being charming and amusing and yet can be devastatingly intense and passionate if the occasion demands. If the spirit of the America pioneer is alive and well anywhere, it is in the heart of Dede Cooper. And what makes her even more attractive is that she can enjoy her own theatricality. Dramatic, big, extravagant. She is a bold, strong woman. Everything is about her or she makes it about her.

Bella Gardner- (age 40 to 60) An attractive drinker, the kind of woman who always stars in the local musical of a small town- with the exception that she seems conscious of her destiny, dresses with expensive comment, and is wickedly calculating no matter how much she’s had to drink. Big, loud, unafraid to say or do anything. Loves her alcohol and is always “acting.” Excellent comedic timing. Sarcastic and witty like Karen on Will & Grace. She is the town tramp. She married for money but is adulterous.

***Bella gets kissed by another woman.***

Suits- (age 30 to 50) A fat younger woman who seems rather jolly and naïve. She’s got a good cover on whatever neurotic impulses cause her to gorge herself, as she obviously does. Although she tries her best to be obsequious at all, there is a reservoir of power underneath it all. Joanne’s sidekick. Tends to be the puppy dog that follows around those in power. Sheis insecure with every aspect about herself. She really has no friends and does not know how to make them. So when someone shows her the least bit of attention, she tends to “serve” them. Serving them is the only way Suits knows how to be or make a friend.

***Suits  kisses another woman***

Joanne Remington- (age 40 to 60) Looks like what she is: rich and powerful, a presence to be reckoned with. She’s a bit like a pacing animal whose primitive instincts are imprisoned by bars made of generations of social steel. Enemy to Dede Cooper. Is trying to take back control of the Alamo Theatre. She thinks she is in a higher class than everyone else, especially Dede. She has no true friends because of her money.

Shirley Fuller- (40 to 50) Everthing about her appearance is dramatic, twitching in motion. She is always “on.” She smiles broadly, smokes grandly and it is obvious her primary philosophy is that “a thing in motion would sooner catch the eye.” She attempts to compensate for her clothes and accessories by doing double time with her facial muscles. She is well spoken, her voice resonant, but a fair judge of character would sense there is much tension underneath. An ex-academy award nominee who had a nervous breakdown and was committed for some time. She is held together by pins and needles. Is always on some form of medication or tranquilization to help her get thru life.

***Shirley is topless for a moment. However, her back will be facing the audience.***
